Multidisciplinary Research Unit

History:

With support from the Department of Health Research, the Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) Program was successfully initiated in 2015 by Dr. Sankarnarayan, Dean of TMC, and Dr. G. Ravikumar, Professor and Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery. The MRU Program provides research grants to foster research in and around the Thanjavur area, as well as at institutions of higher education and clinical research. The Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit supports highly competitive research utilizing rigorous quantitative methods to analyze large-scale research-related data. This research and training program aim to advance knowledge and build research capacity in education and clinical studies. Since 2015, this Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit has been essential to both research and training for early-career researchers in Thanjavur, under the guidance of Dr. G. Ravikumar as the Nodal Officer.

The Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit encourages the utilization of major datasets from multiple and diverse sources. It emphasizes proposals that span various life stages and contexts of research and learning, with relevance to clinical research and practice. The research can focus on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, researchers’ achievements in clinical studies, contextual factors in research, and educational participation and persistence.

Engaging in multi-disciplinary research offers several distinct advantages:

Our specific approach and expertise, which may be standard within our discipline, can be novel in other fields. Applying our knowledge in these new areas provides us with a leading advantage and a unique perspective for solving outstanding problems. By collaborating with complementary research groups such as SASTRA, we combine collective expertise and gain synergy. This collaboration increases the likelihood of producing original, high-impact research and enhances our potential to achieve more output with less effort.

A key factor in this evolving understanding has been the impact of ongoing, meaningful research.

The objective of a research unit is to facilitate interaction among faculty, researchers, students, and patients to enhance research opportunities, academic excellence, real-world problem-solving, and the creation and dissemination of knowledge. This goal was supported by the Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit, which motivated us to establish a student wing that embodies these principles.

To enhance research productivity and ensure the successful culmination of research initiatives, a research unit aims to disseminate knowledge through various outlets, including:

  1. Publishing in prestigious scholarly journals and industry-related magazines
  2. (b) Publishing books, book chapters, and monographs
  3. (c) Organizing academic and practitioner conferences
  4. (d) Holding seminars for both faculty and students
  5. (e) Offering workshops for research scholars and researchers.

Our Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit ensures that each faculty member participates in various training programs, workshops, conferences, and visits. This engagement fosters a healthy exchange of ideas, resulting in a fertile research environment.
